Spirit of the Land — part I: Noppanan Thannaree solo exhibition

Artist Statement

This collection is part of the landscape painting series Life Force, created between 2021 and 2024. The exhibition features selected works inspired by the artist explorations of various historical sites, such as the Ancient City of Ayutthaya, Sukhothai, Dvaravati (Nakhon Pathom), Chiang Saen (Chiang Rai), as well as northern hill tribe villages with traditional animistic beliefs amidst the multicultural context of modern society. It includes drawings and small-scale paintings created as on-site sketches during outdoor explorations, as well as larger paintings developed in the studio, drawing inspiration from those initial experiences.

The atmosphere of those historical sites made me feel magical and attracted me to explore their beauty, following the traces of ancient civilizations that have been around for a long time, along with the essential elements that are nature, the sky, sunlight, land and trees, which are performing a powerful show together. Creating the images in my imagination to emerge while being in the environment of each area mentioned above. Recording them as line drawings and small paintings initially creates a special moment that is engraved in my memory. It is also an important raw material for imagination to continue to create this series of works.

This series of paintings is composed of factors that are divided into 2 dimensions. The first dimension is the physical layer that the eyes see. It is the structure of the way of thinking in the form of landscape paintings that focuses on the realism of what the eyes see and the sensations from direct experiences. The second dimension is the layer of images that arise from imagination. It is a spiritual dimension. Therefore, this series of paintings therefore expresses the state between the concrete and the abstract dimensions.

Creating an opportunity to take myself to spend time in historical sites made me think like a curious child that what those places had been through long ago. Until I imagined further that before civilization formed, the most original thing was nature. And when civilization decays, nature grows in its place according to factors. Nature has the property of arising and passing away. This means that great civilizations are only a small part of nature. At the same time, I felt much smaller. Inside my heart, I began to bow to the phenomena in front of me and felt that my identity had temporarily disappeared. 

However, these works that I created are like a flash of light arising from my imagination as an individual. But at the same time, I cannot deny interacting with the multidimensional environment in different times, both places, people, and factors that are beyond my control. However, I am happy to share my work with the audience and embrace the freedom of thought that comes from the small points in my creations. This is my joy as a painter.

ผลงานชุดนี้เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของจิตรกรรมทิวทัศน์ชุด Life Force ที่สร้างขึ้นในปี 2021-2024 โดยนิทรรศการนี้ได้คัดเลือกผลงานบางส่วนที่สร้างขึ้นโดยได้รับแรงบันดาลใจจากการเยี่ยมชมและสำรวจโบราณสถานต่างๆ อาทิ เมืองโบราณ จ.พระนครศรีอยุธยา จ.สุโขทัย ทวารวดี (จ.นครปฐม) เชียงแสน (จ.เชียงราย) ตลอดจนหมู่บ้านชาวเขาทางภาคเหนือที่มีความเชื่อดั้งเดิมเกี่ยวกับวิญญาณนิยมท่ามกลางความเป็นพหุวัฒนธรรมในสังคมปัจจุบัน ประกอบด้วยผลงานที่เป็นภาพวาดลายเส้นและจิตรกรรมขนาดเล็กที่เป็นการบันทึกในขณะที่ออกไปสำรวจยังพื้นที่กลางแจ้ง และผลงานจิตรกรรมที่นำแรงบันดาลใจเหล่านั้นกลับมาสร้างสรรค์ต่อในสตูดิโอ

บรรยากาศในโบราณสถานเหล่านั้นทำให้ผมรู้สึกว่ามีมนต์ขลังและพลังดึงดูดให้ผมเข้าไปสำรวจความงดงาม ตามร่องรอยของอารยธรรมในอดีตที่ผ่านกาลเวลามายาวนาน ควบคู่กับองค์ประกอบสำคัญที่ขาดไม่ได้นั่นคือธรรมชาติ ท้องฟ้า แสงแดด ผืนดินและต้นไม้ ที่กำลังร่วมกันแสดงมหรสพอันทรงพลัง ส่งต่อให้ภาพในจินตนาการของผมผุดพรายขึ้นในขณะที่กำลังอยู่ท่ามกลางสภาพแวดล้อมของแต่ละพื้นที่ที่กล่าวมาในตอนต้น การบันทึกเป็นภาพลายเส้นและวาดภาพจิตรกรรมชิ้นเล็กชิ้นน้อยในเบื้องต้นเป็นการสร้างช่วงเวลาอันแสนพิเศษที่ผนึกเข้าไปในความทรงจำของผม อีกทั้งยังเป็นวัตถุดิบสำคัญให้กับการจินตนาการต่อยอดสร้างสรรค์ผลงานชุดนี้ได้ต่อไป

ผลงานจิตรกรรมชุดนี้ถูกประกอบสร้างขึ้นจากปัจจัยที่แบ่งออกเป็น 2 มิติด้วยกัน มิติแรกคือชั้นของกายภาพที่ตาเห็น เป็นโครงสร้างของวิธีคิดในรูปแบบจิตรกรรมทิวทัศน์ที่มุ่งเน้นความเสมือนจริงของสิ่งที่ตาเห็นและผัสสะจากประสบการณ์ตรง ส่วนมิติที่สองคือชั้นของภาพที่เกิดจากจินตนาการ เป็นสภาวะมิติด้านจิตวิญญาณ จิตรกรรมชุดนี้จึงแสดงออกถึงสภาวะที่อยู่ระหว่างกันของมิติทางรูปธรรมและนามธรรม

การสร้างโอกาสเพื่อพาตัวเองเข้าไปใช้เวลาในโบราณสถานที่มีความสำคัญทางประวัติศาสตร์ ทำให้ผมเกิดความคิดเหมือนเด็กน้อยขี้สงสัยไปว่า กาลครั้งหนึ่งนานมาแล้วสถานที่เหล่านั้นเคยผ่านอะไรมาบ้าง กระทั่งจินตนาการต่ออีกไปว่ากาลครั้งหนึ่งก่อนอารยธรรมจะก่อตัวขึ้น สิ่งที่มีอยู่ดั้งเดิมที่สุดก็คือธรรมชาติใช่หรือไม่ และเมื่ออารยธรรมเสื่อมสลายธรรมชาติกลับงอกงามแทนที่สิ่งๆนั้นตามเหตุปัจจัย ธรรมชาตินั้นมีคุณสมบัติของการเกิด-ดับ นั่นหมายความว่าอารยธรรมที่ยิ่งใหญ่ก็เป็นเพียงเสี้ยวเล็กๆของธรรมชาติเช่นกัน

ผมรู้สึกตัวเล็กลงมากในขณะเดียวกัน ภายในใจก็เริ่มศิโรราบต่อปรากฏการณ์ที่อยู่ตรงหน้าและรู้สึกว่าตัวตนได้สลายไปชั่วขณะ อย่างไรก็ตามผลงานที่ผมได้สร้างสรรค์ขึ้นเหล่านี้ก็เปรียบเสมือนลำแสงเพียงวาบหนึ่งที่เกิดขึ้นจากจินตนาการในฐานะปัจเจกบุคคล แต่ในขณะเดียวกันก็ไม่อาจจะปฏิเสธที่จะมีปฏิสัมพันธ์กับสิ่งแวดล้อมหลากมิติในห้วงเวลาต่างๆ ทั้งสถานที่ ผู้คน และปัจจัยต่างๆที่อยู่นอกเหนือการควบคุมของผมได้ กระนั้นแล้วผมยังเกิดความยินดีที่ได้เผยแพร่ผลงานของผมไปพร้อมกับการอ้าแขนรับอิสระทางความคิดของผู้ชมที่หลากหลาย ซึ่งเกิดขึ้นจากจุดเล็กๆในผลงานที่ผมสร้างสรรค์ขึ้น สิ่งเหล่านี้เป็นความสุขของผมในฐานะจิตรกรคนหนึ่ง
